License

note

This article explains our licensing model. You can find the instructions on how to set the license key here.

Our license model

We've spent a good deal of time trying to come up with a licensing model that is fair, provides our customers with peace of mind as they develop their games, and allows us to continue improving our technology. Ultimately we decided on the following:

Our plugins come with a perpetual license and 1 year of free updates. After that, to continue receiving updates, customers can purchase an extension at a reduced price (for Indie that's 30% off in the first year and 50% off after that).

Purchasing updates is optional and we don't charge for them automatically (nor do we save the payment details that would allow us to do so). Most importantly you never lose access to the version you have bought even if you don't get additional updates.

License seats

Editor seats

When you purchase a license, it comes with a certain number of "editor seats". Everytime an artist activates one of the plugin's features in the editor a seat is assigned to their machine and it stays assigned for a several hours after that.

Some examples of actions that would result in a seat being taken are:

  • regenerating biomes,
  • moving Errant Landscape brushes
  • entering one of our plugins' Edit modes.

As long as there are seats available anyone with the license key can claim one. If there are no seats left new users won't be able to enter the plugin's Edit Mode or use its features. People who were using the plugin before will be able to continue using the plugin normally.

Runtime seats

With the introduction of Runtime Landscape mode in Errant Landscape we introduced a concept of Runtime seats. This is a separate pool of seats that are consumed whenever the landscape is modified at runtime using our plugin. It's important to note that runtime license seats are only required when testing the game in the editor. We do not check the license in a packaged game.

Runtime seats are not purchased separately; instead, each editor seat includes 5 runtime seats.
